Comments: I loved the web page ....there was just one thing I could not find. That was how can I adopt a tortoise??? I would really love to have one. My son loves them and of course I do. I have four turtles already. 2 box turtles and 2 water turtles. They have been w/ me for two years ( the box turtles) and the water turtles only a month or two. So if you can help me I would be appreciate it alot. Thankyou Tammy Partridge

Comments: I've signed this before but now you have a new address and I have a new email address I thought I'd do it again! I still have two spur thighs and at the moment I have a baby tortoise, which is the offspring of the original two. Hopefully it will live to a good old age, although I am bit worried about its shell at the moment. I also have three cats! But all neutered, so no babies to come there.

Comments: After three years, one of my spur-thighed eggs have hatched. Now I am worried sick in case I am doing something wrong, I have read and spoken to several people about my hatchling and have heard three diffrent answers. This is my first time surfing and have found slowcoach interesting and I hope can answer some questions I still have and confirm I am doing the best for my little fellow. I believe he is going to be the only one out of the two eggs to hatch as its been five days now.

Comments: Hello everybody I've just been given a tortoise due to a bereavement, which I pick up this afternoon. I'm not sure what species it is or any other info other than it is about thirty years old. I'm really excited but also a little bit nervous now that I've read up on the husbandry side. I've wanted a tortoise for many years now. I'd also like to get hold of another, so if there is anyone out there that could help.... I'll keep you posted on how I get on. I've just got to find a local society and attend a weigh in/check up clinic to see if we're well enough (and fat enough) for hibernation. Bye for now Rachel

Comments: Excellent info except I couldn't find out if tortoises laid unfertilised eggs, so I have emailed the BCG to ask. I am now desperate to acquire a tortoise or two as I have enjoyed looking after and improving the health of my friend's two tortoises for three weeks, improving their diet, and getting one to lay eggs on the owner's return. Unfortunately, he has refrigerated them, asuming them to be unfertilised. The tortoises are |Meditteraneam and I am not convinved they are both female. If anyone has a hatchling or an unwanted tortoise, I'd love to accomodate it. Ros Stanley.

Comments: Planning to buy a tortoise Sept - Dec 2000. Needed to find out about the various breeds, diet etc. Would be grateful if any breeders or anyone selling vivariums ( even second hand ones - in good condition) could get in touch. Have seen Sulcatta tortoises in a local DIY store, alongside aquariums - think they seem nice - know they can grow very large ! Advice, thoughts etc. most welcome. I am now 10 years old, but my mum and dad are very willing to help out with the care etc. I want to be a marine biologist when I grow up, but think that terrapins would be even more difficult to look after than tortoises. Plan to try to get mine to live to at least 2070!!!!

Comments: I enjoyed your website, but I am having trouble finding information on Greek Tortioses. I have had a pair of adults for about six years now. They were exported from Egypt, but origionally were collected from Iran, I believe. They do quite well in our hot climate, but I had yet to see them breed and lay eggs. I would frequently see breeding behavior, but no digging of nest sites. Yet, just one week ago, to my suprise, I found two hatchlings and a day later one more. Not only had she dug a secluded nest site, which I still have been unable to find, the eggs naturally incubated in our hard clay based dirt during a very hot summer(temps. of up to 112 degrees)and the hatchlings showed up during our monsoon storms, which I believed may have triggered them to hatch. In any case these babies are extremely healthy, but I would love more information on breeding Greek Tortoises and raising hatchlings. I am also raising two Sulcata hatchlings that are nearing one year. Again great site, but wish there were more info out there on Greek Tortoises.

We took snapshots of it and although they aren't jpeg or other, if you'd like, I can send negative. It was of the Chaco family, it looks like. The man that actually found it, gave it to his grandkids and they took him straight to the vet. Most interesting 'reptile?'

Comments: Hi, Everybody! This is great - I found a baby Russian tortoise in a park in Helsinki the other week. Someone has either lost it or left it. I was picking chickweed for my canaries under a bush, and there he (or she) was. First I thought that it was an unusual looking stone, then a tortoise shell. I picked it up and out came the head and the limbs. I took him home, put him in the canary cage and gave him dandelion leaves and flowers, chickweed and lettuce. He tucked right in. Now I have rigged up a proper terrarium for him. I notified the humane society and pet shops that sell reptiles, but nobody has come forward. He seems to be in good nick with strong legs, bright eyes, ravenous appetite and he takes interest in his surroundings. He is tiny, only about 3 inches across. My husband does not want me to keep him because we have lots of other pets, but I have become quite attached to him and am going to keep him. I will take proper care of him and this site will be a great help. Thankyou. Raili

Comments: I would like to thank you for the useful information! After purchasing a sick tortoise(archie)from a local pet store I have found a great need for information.Even with great effort, tube feeding, antibiotics, and lots of love, she died after much effort to save her.with absolutely no cooperation from Petco!(oops!did I say that?)Having worked with animals all my life it is hard to believe I purchased a sick pet.I strongly encourage anyone looking for a new pet to educate themselves prior to purchase.Even with my experience all pets are different and I was unaware.(shame on me!)Now with the help of websites like this and books and the advice of my local veterinarian,I am on to a new and very healthy Russian Tortoise named Melly!(short for watermellon)Named lovingly by my son!Good luck to all of you with your adventures. Sincerely, Laura,Spencer and of course Melly!

Comments: You happened to be the best site I've visited to gather info on tortises. The caresheets provides excellent information on diets and animal behaviours and the pics are great too, considering the inclusion of some rare species like the ploughshare. I have successfully raised 3 Indian Stars from baby for the last 6 years and a small Elongata for a year. Have also recently acquired a pair of juvenile Indian Tent Tortise/turtle but could not seem to find good turtle-info anywhere, specially this species. So how about introducing turtles to the site?

We are explaining the Romantic Poets as a point to illuminate for Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia". My job is to give the informative asides about each of poets. I thought a nice pub menu would be a great prop. The tent tortoise looks very nice. I have recently learned that there is a large population of Sulcata here in my area (Dhahran) and people haven't a clue how to keep them. I am slowly tracking them down and giving them internet sites to view and printed caresheets. Most people are grateful. Unfortuneately, we have no herp vet anywhere to turn to. I am a veterinary nurse and would like to know more about reptile medicine. Where can I turn on line or for more complete reading?

Comments: I have a particular seed blend that I would like to grow for use for grazing for my Leopard Tortoises. I want to check out each species to make sure that it is a suitable feed for the Tortoises as it was actually developed for White Tail Deer and Wild Turkey. It contains a variety of clover, rye grass, and rape. Is there someone I can write to with the complete list, to check it out? Sandy

Comments: I think the information given is very good. Just one thing would be nice with regard to the 'Your Tortoise' page. You pose a number of questions - rightly so - but could you suggest a book for basic beginers at the end of the questions. Although anyone just starting with tortoises will probably join a club it would be helpful to know which book gives the best information before actually getting tortoises.

Comments: I would like to give my tortise the chance to breed but I don't know if it's possible in this climate, I don't know what breed he is & come to think of it, I'm not sure what sex either. I got him for my first birthday, he's called Tommy the Ferocious Tortoise, he's brown & about 8" long and he's been awake for about a fortnight and ate some cucumer on Friday. I'm still puting him in the greenhouse at night as it's a bit chilly. If anyone has any breeding suggestions please let me know. Thanks, Susan.
