Comments: Just inherited a Spur-Thighed Tortoise (Suzie) and we are looking for information on keeping and caring for our new addition to the Family. Our cat "Maggie" does`nt know quite what to make of it, but she is a slow and fasinating creature. She`s 24 years old apparently and lived in the Garden for most of them, but we just want to make sure we look after her properly.

Comments: HELP! Just purchased a baby Sulcata (African spur-thigh) tortoise, and at the moment am feeling Very Overwhelmed, especially after reading the material available about this certain tortoise. I am certaintly a novice in this area and would appreciate any tips, suggestions, comments on providing my tortoise with a healthy environment, specifically indoors since I live in a "winter" state. I would also like some idea of what to expect from my baby tortoise. I really don't know how old he or she is except for that he or she is about 4 inches long at present, maybe five. I want to give my tortoise the right start, comments are appreciated, THANKS!

Comments: I don't normally sign these guest book things, but I thought I'd make an exception here! I've had acess to the Internet for the past four years, now, and, being an avid chelonianist for just under a decade, have been searching long and hard for a decent site on tortoises. It's not until now, however, that I've finally found one! Slowcoach is EXCELLENT! Despite the fact that I'm quite up on my husbandry and breeding, having successfully bred both Med. Spur-thighed tortoises and Indian Star tortoises, your site has given me useful contact addresses to which to write in order to enquire about inportation of my captive bred hatchlings. They haven't replied to my queries yet, it must be said, but I'm hoping they will in the near future. Struan Henderson

We found a Forest Hingeback Tortoise in a reptile store in our area which we bought for her. Not knowing much about these reptiles I figured I'd surf around to get educated. Your website was a great help. Thank you. I was able to locate just the book I need to help us in caring for our new pet. Keep up the good work. I'm sure we'll be by again. Thanks again. Comments: This is a great site! I have a 40 lb. Spur Thigh and a 20 lb. Leopard tortoise. They both thrive on dandelion, kale, collards, and romain as their staple diet. I supplement with assorted fruits such as strawberries, apples, banana, tomato, watermellon, cantelope, pears, peaches and kiwi(which seems to be a big favorite). Yellow zucchini is a big hit, too. They also graze on grass all summer in our large backyard. They will crawl into my lap to eat by hand. The spur thigh excavated a 3 ft by 18 in. burrow.(Name is Broomhilda) Bruticus has been occasionally battered by her, but still keeps up his amourous intentions. She occassionally permits him to mate. In addition to these wonderful pets, I have two snapping turtles (alligator and common), an Australian Snakeneck, two spiny soft shells, a South American wood turtle, and a Chinese box. I also have a loving and tolerant wife.

Comments: Hi, I am the owner of an African Spur thighed, Sulcata tortoise, he or she is only about a year old right now. Anyway, I have some questions about the species. I have heard many different things, feed them supplements, don't they grow healthy without them. I don't know what to do, I usually buy a land tortoise prepared, wet and serve food, with no animal or insect protein, and it seems to like it. I also feed it spinach, brocolli, and alfalfa sprouts, and alfalfa bale, in the spring I feed him fresh clovers, and strawberries. But I don't want to keep feeding him the store bought food, its expensive, and one package may be only an appetizer or a snack when he gets larger. But If I feed him the fresh veggies and fruit for a few days he wont eat it anymore. What do I do? Also, I have seen pictures, and real tortoises, and some of their shells are perfectly rounded, some are slightly bumpy. My young tortoise has a shell that is beginning to appear slightly bumpy. I hear that that can be a sign of becoming infertile, or internal problems. He appears lively and healthy. His shell is not cut or broken or soft, his skin is still the same color and textures, his eyes are bright and he is strong. I would like someone that has a Sulcata tortoise to be able to contact through the mail. I do not have my own email base, the address is my mothers, please feel free to contact me there, I would greatly apprieciate it. Thank you, very much, ...a very interested tortoise mom

Comments: I am in desparate need of help! My 2 year old Spur-thighed has just got up from his second 1-month hibernation. Although he is eating a small amount of 'tortoise food'(the coloured pellet type)he won't eat very much of any-thing else! I am getting worred that he may have become anorexic. He just sleeps all the time! Any suggestions for the fussy-eater?

Comments: I love tortoises. I had one for almost 18 years, but it died in April 1998. It was a Russian tortoise (Testudo horsfieldi). It came out of hibernation and didn't want to eat or run around. Usually, it was a very active, vivid tortoise that run around shortly after hibernation and also started eating very fast. But this time it didn't. We brought it to a veterinarian, who is a specialist for small animals. He couldn't find anything wrong with her, she looked normal. He gave her a vitamin injection, since the tortoise never liked to eat her food when vitamin drops were mixed into it. But it didn't help. The tortoise didn't start eating or running around, it just slept. We took her back to the veterinarian who told us that she probably was just old and that it is too weak and that's why it doesn't eat and walk. Soon afterwards it died. I still don't know if it was really just old or if it had a disease that the veterinarian couldn't recognize. It was a very sweet turtle and we loved it very much.

We kept him in an enclosure in the back yard til it got very cold and some pipes broke. We were afraid he would drown or freeze. We have him in a huge box with cedar filling in our kitchen. We are trying to feed him lettuce and turtle food. Its difficult to tell whether he is eating. Do you have any advice for us?

Comments: Hi! I am in the process in building a breeding herd of box turtles and tortoises. I currently run about "40 head" including several species of both. My collection includes three-toed, ornate, eastern box turtles and leopard, greek, russian, red-foot, and yellow-foot tortoises. To date my only success has been three-toed with about 40 hatchlings in the past three years. Hope to hear from other amateurs.

Hopefully "Betty Sue" is on the mend, after receiving some much needed guidance from a reptile vet here in Spokane. We all felt very bad about just about loosing her, however when we bought her from the pet store, we were told they were easy keepers and just feed them crickets and keep them warm...but as we know now, not so, as there is a little more care needed!

Comments: This is a very informative site for me. I have had a tortoise, or maybe she has me, for about 5 or 6 years now. She lives in my backyard and is left pretty much alone. She will come up to my sliding glass patio door each day and bump her shell on the door to get our attention. I will cut up about half a cucumber (her favorite) and feed her outside. When she is done she will go her merry way and I won't see her again till the next day. Each year around the latter part of September or the first part of October she will start her hibernation in the same spot in my yard. I check on her periodically throughout the winter season and sometime in March or April she will awaken. I think she is a Grecian tortoise, although I am not positive. Her name is Fred. My family and all of the neighborhood children love to watch her eat and slowly ramble about the yard. She is always willing to be hand fed a little bit of cucumber or tomato (her 2nd favorite) from a child if he will be patient enough. My other animals, a dog and cat, are very tolerant of Fred and never seem to bother her although the cat always keeps an eye on Fred when they are in close proximity. I used to let Fred come in the house and would feed her in the house but my wife banished her to the back yard when one night while my wife was going to the bathroom about 1or 2am and Fred decided to take an evening stroll around the house. All would have been alright if Fred had not decided to walk over my wife's foot in the dark bathroom. The moment I heard the scream I knew what had happened. That night Fred came awfully close to soup. She hasn't been in the house since. I'm just lucky I am still allowed in the house.

Förresten, Chagall är en två år gammal Rysk stäppsköldpadda! Mycket vacker!!! Hej, hej

Comments: Wow! I never knew how many other kindred souls there are! Greetings and best wishes to all who love turtles and/or who are privileged to share their lives with them. Just a few fun-filled, free-falling minutes of surfing the Net (or should I say web?) and yet another universe appears full-blown! I know have two young box turtles that hatched from a clutch of four eggs I discovered in my compost heap in East Hampton, New York. I didn't take any of the "wild" adults that shared my compost, garden, yard and life there, but the "little ones" who did come to Vermont are thriving happily (AND I have actually observed native, Vermont cousins of theirs here in southern Vermont's Connecticut River Valley, so I KNOW that mine are not the only boxies this far north! I am looking for a chance to expand the "chelonian" portion of our household with a few more turtle/tortoise "relatives"--NOT for them necessarily, but for me! It won't surprise anyone to know that I have a zillion anecdotes about intelligent my boxies are, how they recognize individual cats and people, have definite opinions on almost everything and how they seem to prefer being with us--even inside--over out in their [I think terrificly appointed] outside pens! But, I'll let some other fanatic prattle on for me and "me little shelled frinds..."

Would love to hear from others and share info on housing, feeding, etc. I also have seven box turtles in an enclosure in the yard. It's actually the 16' x 28' rabbit pen and they hybernate in the rabbit tunnels. Anybody know where I can get a T-shirt with a nice tortoise picture on it? An African spurred's picture would be even better.

Have kept various reptiles throughout my life, (several years with rat snakes, boas, pythons, various lizards, etc.). Had to drop hobby a few years back, as work became all too important. Have daughter (Bio/Chem Major!) who has been maintaining and studying water turtles last two years, has rekindled my old interests. Plus now have large yard and more time (work paid off! Interested in finding hobbyist in my area working with any Geochelone. If I decide to purchase animals, would prefer to deal with local hobbyist/breeder, always a sure way to assure CB, and animals are generally much better cared for. When Igot her she had a servere pneumonia and was very weak. She had been left on a floor that was far to cold for about a year, without any heat provided, she weighed only 320 grams and after only two months in my care she had gained enough weight to weigh 590grams. Yesterday she lay 6 eggs, that I am now trying to hatch, wish me and my two parent tortoises(Sebastian and Emma) luck!
