A SUITABLE VIVARIUM FOR MEDITERRANEAN HATCHLINGS

There are a number of designs available for constucting a vivarium suitable for Mediterranean hatchlings.  They are all very good but the one described here I have found to work well.  It is really a matter of preference.

CONSTRUCTION

1.  The container used is an 'under bed' storage box, obtainable from most hardware or DIY stores.  This particular one measures approx 24 x 16 x 6 inches.

2.  A 50/50 mixture of playpit sand and compost is used for the substrate.  The depth of the substrate should be approx 1.5 inches and should be dry.

3.  The basking lamp used here is a simple desk lamp containing a 60 watt spot bulb.  Again, both the lamp and bulb are readily available from most hardware and DIY stores.  The temperature directly under the basking lamp should be between 90 - 95 F.  The lamp should be positioned at one end of the vivarium.

4.  Full spectrum fluorescent tube (available from herpetological suppliers and some pet shops).  These tubes are specially made to provide UVB (ultra violet light) which is necessary to convert vitamin D into its active form.  They also have a very high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) that almost perfectly matches natural sunlight. Do not, therefore, use the ordinary domestic type of tube; they are not suitable.

5.  Optional timer which switches lamps on and off at specified times.

The terrain can be varied by placing pieces of sandstone, pebbles, cork or bark (or a selection of all these) in the vivarium.

Provide a small wooden box (or a number of boxes) or piece of bark for sleeping accommodation; these should not be located directly under the basking lamp.

OPERATION OF THE VIVARIUM

Aim for the following:

• 12 hours with the lamps switched on (daytime)

• 12 hours with the lamps switched off (night time)

It is a good idea to perform this automatically by using a timer.

Important Note:  Do not rely upon underfloor heating or any form of convected or conducted heat; tortoises need radiant heat during the day.  Ie, that produced by the sun or a spotbulb.  They must be allowed to bask.

A heat mat is not necessary.  Room temperature is sufficient for night time heating provided the vivarium is kept indoors.

During the summer months the hatchlings are best kept out of doors in a suitable garden pen but should be placed in the vivarium during the night if temperatures become too low.
