OUTDOOR ACCOMMODATION FOR ADULT MEDITERRANEAN & HORSFIELD'S TORTOISES

by Bob Elliot

This is my design for outdoor accommodation for adult Mediterranean & Horsfield's tortoises.

It is important to note that an outdoor electricity supply is required.  If you are in any doubt as to how to go about installing such a supply, then I strongly recommend that you consult a competent electrician - don't take the risk.

It is also important to ensure that any wood treatments used for the hutch or shelter are non-toxic.

For this design I have used a shed measuring 6 by 3 feet.  The size of the shed you use, however, will depend on the number of tortoises you intend to house.

View of the shed.
Insulate base of shed with loft lagging.

Attach tongue and groove floorboards (19 mm thick) to the base of the shed, using suitable screws.

Once the floorboards are in place they may be treated with a suitable non-toxic wood preservative.
Select an area at the rear of the shed for night time accomodation.

Line the walls of this area with loft lagging.

Affix plyboard (8 mm) over the lagging.
Construct a box using chipboard (16 mm thick) ensuring that the top of the box (or lid) can be lifted when required.

The box construction may be treated with a non-toxic wood preservative.

Attach suitable bulb holders to the inside of the lid and insert night time reflector bulbs or, preferably, ceramic heat bulbs (100 watts each).  These should be connected to a dimmer thermostat set at 12 - 14 Celsius.  ie the temperature in the box will never drop below 12 - 14 Celsius.

Drill a hole in the lid and insert the thermostat sensor.

Place lid back on top of box.

Attach bulb holders to sides of shed and insert reflector bulbs (100 watts each).

These may be connected to timers which can be set to switch on and off at various times or overriden manually.

Ensure that there is an entrance for the tortoises to come and go as they please.
